In the last financial year, the Care of Elderly Division
of NISD came up with the following course curricula/syllabi:
- Syllabus for 6 months certificate course on Geriatric Care
- Syllabus for 1-year Post Graduate Diploma in Integrated Geriatric
Care
On the basis of above syllabus, training modules are being
developed and pre-tested.
Activities
As part of National Initiative on Care for Elderly (NICE),
NISD conducts:
- Consultative Meetings of Experts on the Geriatrics
- Training of Master Trainers in Geriatric Care
- Training and Academic Courses in Geriatric Care
- Orientation Programmes for Senior Citizens in the Community
- Sensitization Programmes for Youth
- Sensitization Programmes for School Teachers/Students
- Orientation Programmes for key functionaries of Allied System such
as Police, Health, Judiciary, Elected Representative, etc.
- Out-Reach Programmes in the community to assess and meet the needs
of the Elderly
Training & Capacity Building
3-Month Certificate Course: Under the 3-Month
Certificate Course, the NGO trainees are exposed to different techniques
and tools relevant for geriatric care. Under this programme two hundred
and fifty NGO key functionaries from all over India have been trained
so far. (NorthEast - Imphal; East - Kolkata; West - Pune; South - Hyderabad
and North - New Delhi).
6-Month Certificate Course: The 6-Month
Certificate Course is being run at four regional centers namely New Delhi,
Kolkota, Imphal and Hyderabad. So far 300 students have passed the examination.
The 4th batch was to start from May 2004. The selection is made on the
basis of All India Entrance Examination and Common Aptitude Test (CAT)
by inviting applications through advertisement in the National/ Regional
newspapers. There are basically four modules; Social Gerontology, Basic
Geriatrics, Applied Geriatric and Geriatric Nursing.
1-Year Post Graduate Diploma Course: The
Post Graduate Course curriculum includes subjects such as Geriatrics,
Geriatrics Health, Geriatric Management, Social Policy & Planning,
Geriatric Counselling and Geriatrics Research. It includes theoretical
as well as practical sessions, internship and project work. In addition,
seminar presentation and dissertation are other essential parts of the
course. There are 20 seats available. Meritorious students are awarded
scholarships.
Post Graduate Diploma
The support services in existing system are insufficient
to cater to the needs of increasing number of the older persons, both
in urban as well as rural settings. It is necessary to equip ourselves,
to meet the challenges in fulfilling the myriad needs of the older persons.
A specialised one year Post Graduate Diploma Course in Integrated
geriatric care is instituted under the Project NICE,
to meet the demand for providing skill based, field oriented, trained
personnel in the area of the care of older persons and also to develop
it as a challenging career. The course is meant to provide a comprehensive
and scientific knowledge base on various aspects relating to the care
of the older persons in order to develop an appropriate aptitude and skills
for working with Older Persons. There are six specialized papers for the
course; Geriatrics, Geriatric Health, Geriatric Management, Social Policy
& Planning, Geriatric Counseling, and Geriatric Research.
Eligibility Criterion:
A Second Class graduate degree. Preference is given to the
Sociology, Social work, Anthropology, Home Science and Nursing graduates.
Applicants who have a certificate in Age Care and experience of working
in age care organizations have an added advantage. Admission in the course
is made on the basis of Common Aptitude Test (CAT) held on All India Basis.
A combined merit of entrance test, group discussion and interview is prepared.

Training of Master Trainers
A small group of Maser trainers is prepared by the NISD
itself to teach the different courses developed by the Institute. People
of specified qualifications are selected and they are given two weeks
training for the same. These master trainers are trained for all the regions,
where these courses are run viz North, South, Central, East, West and
North-eastern parts of India.
Three Month Training Course
These courses are meant for the NGO Key Functionaries in
the field of Age Care and funded by the Ministry under grant-in-aid scheme.
Since these functionaries are already working in the field of age care,
the course provides them theoretical as well as practical inputs to enhance
their skills. These training progammes are conducted at different regions
all over the country. During the year 2000-02 , NISD conducted 10 three
month courses in North-East (Imphal), East (Kolkata), West (Pune), South
(Hyderabad) and North (New Delhi) parts of India. A total of 250 NGOs
have benefited by these training programmes. It also held 3 three-day
evaluation and review programmes on this course at Delhi, Hyderabad and
Kolkata and updated the course Module/Manual.
The course prepares by means of didactic lectures and practical.
It also involves a short term Internship. During the internship, the students
conduct out-reach Programmes for six months duration covering 300 cases
of the 60+ older persons for need assessment and their fulfillment.
Certificate Course
Main objective of conceptualizing this course is to develop
a cadre of frontline personnel of Geriatric Care Givers (Geriatric Animators)
and to generate skilled manpower focused on intervention in the family
& community settings for the welfare of the older persons. The younger
generations need to be encouraged to attend to the needs of the older
persons. Therefore, creating a frontline personnel for old age care by
providing them appropriate training in social, psychological and physical
needs of elderly is the goal of initiating this course.
This course is an appropriate mix of theoretical sessions
with field exposure and practical training to build up knowledge, attitude
and skills in the field of Geriatric Care. The certificate course is being
run at four regional centers namely New Delhi, Kolkata, Imphal and Hyderabad.
So far, 217 students have cleared the examination. The 3rd batch has been
announced which is starting from last week of September, 2003.
Eligibility Criterion :
Matriculation with at least 45% marks and attained minimum
of 18 years of age. Admission in the course is made on the basis of Common
Aptitude Test (CAT) held on All India Basis in the month of Jan./July
every year. Final selection in the course is made on the basis of combined
merit of entrance test and interview.
